Bed and Breakfast Queensland - Licuala Lodge

Licuala Lodge is the proud home of Sue and Mick

Sue and Mick Lukowski - mission beach accomodation owners

Sue (red shorts) and Mick (blue shorts with draw string hanging down - what a plonker !). In between them is the Welcome sign of the finest Bed and Breakfast in Queensland

Typical queensland bed and breakfast landlady

The Dishwasher - bears an uncanny resemblance to the landlady. If you can manage to read what it says on her apron, then you can have an extra biscuit with your afternoon cup of tea. See what you get when you stay at Licuala Lodge the finest Bed and Breakfast Queensland has to offer.

The Head Chef and the Trainee Waiter, enjoying a quiet moment before the breakfast rush. Is she thinking 'I wonder how many guests will want a Full Monty this morning ?' and is he thinking 'I hope I get everybody's order right this morning - one more mistake and the chef will fire me for sure !!'

Looks like the under Gardener and head Chambermaid have finished their chores for the day and are enjoying a glass of orange juice by the pool.

owner4.jpg Obviously too hot to be sunbathing so the two workers have moved to the table and are relaxing underneath the big shady umbrella. I wonder if she knows I've put some vodka in her orange juice ??

Mick the (scruffy) Accountant, Sue the (Baby Doll) Receptionist and Megumi the beautiful model and actress from Japan, who came here seeking the best Bed Breakfast Queensland could offer, specially for a photo session for a Japanese magazine and a nice shower. This is a good story - so ask us all about the time a group of Japanese descended upon us for a photo shoot.

owner5.jpg And here's a nice picture taken by Michael and Tanya from Cairns. The landlady is the good looking one with the hat, and the landlord is the well-dressed one. The yellow flower growing on the boardwalk bridge is a Climbing Allamanda (Mandevilla Guanabarica) - flowers almost all year round.
host_gardener2.jpg A recent addition to the Groundstaff. Caroline, who moonlights as a Business Analyst in Sydney when she is not cutting the grass at the Lodge. Once she got over the initial shock of no brakes on the ride-on mower, she was as happy as Larry.

QUEENSLAND

A little bit about the sporting nature of Queensland. Queensland is Australia's second largest state, after Western Australia. It is home to one AFL (Australian Football League) team, called the Brisbane Lions. Funnily enough their home ground is in Brisbane, which is the state capital of Queensland, about 1600 kms from here. They won the Grand Final three years on the trot in 2002, 2003 and 2005. At the time of writing (May 2005) they were struggling near the bottom of the league after a disastrous start to the season. Queensland has two NRL (National Rugby League) teams. The North Queensland Cowboys, whose home ground is Townsville and also the Brisbane Lions, who play in Brissie. The Lions have been the better team over the past few years, however in 2004 the Cowboys did exceptionally well and almost reached the Grand Final, and in 2005, the Cowboys reached the Grand Final only to be beaten by Wests Tigers. During the footy season there are three State of Origin games between Queensland and New South Wales. The Cowboys and Lions will supply the majority of players for the Queensland team. There is a Super League Rugby Union team called the Queensland Reds. However, the least said about them the better.

BED

Bed is an interesting word with several meanings. Most people would refer to a piece of furniture for the purpose of sleeping as a bed. Gardeners call a small plot of cultivated land a flower bed. Bed is also the bottom of a river or other watercourse. Culinary people would refer to layer of food on which another kind of food rests as a bed, eg lobster on a bed of rice. There are several more meanings of the word bed which I am sure you all know.

BREAKFAST

The word breakfast means the first meal of the day. It can also mean a somewhat formal meal, eg a wedding breakfast. Breakfast derives from the Middle English brekfast, brekefast, from breken faste - meaning to break one's fasting. Breakfast is also an intransitive verb meaning to have breakfast, eg "Jeeves, I shall breakfast on the upper verandah this morning"
And all this leads us to the term Bed and Breakfast.

BED and BREAKFAST

A common abbreviation for bed and breakfast is b and b, or b&b. The phrase probably has British roots and it means overnight accommodation and a meal in the morning (ie breakfast). It also refers to the actual guest house or private house that provides a bed and breakfast. There is also a phrase bed and breakfasting used in financial circles, to mean a method of tax avoidance whereby shares are sold one day and bought back the next day to avoid capital gains tax. It refers to the temporary nature of the transaction, as it were bed and breakfast accommodation. I'm not sure that in this day and age of electronic transactions that this sort of dodgy dealing is practiced any more.
I seem to remember from my dart playing days of many years ago, the term bed and breakfast was used if you scored 26, with one dart in the twenty, one in the five and one in the one, possibly going back to the days when 2/6d was considered the going rate for a bed and breakfast in England. Nowadays the rate for a Queensland bed breakfast has increased somewhat.
